United edges Bohs in home opener

The Baltimore Bohemians opened up their 2013 home schedule at Ridley Athletic Complex with a friendly match against the Under-23 squad of Major League Soccer’s D.C. United. Baltimore defeated United 1-0 last June, but this time around, the scoreline was reversed, as Frank Tayou provided the lone goal 15 minutes into the contest to give the visitors the victory.

Baltimore notched the first quality scoring chance six minutes in, when Michael Molloy worked his way into the box, but couldn’t get a foot on a close-range attempt. Minutes later, Mikias Eticha blasted a shot from 25 yards over the bar for the visitors’ first shot at goal.

On the quarter-hour mark, Tyler Rudy delivered in a well-timed cross from the right side, finding Tayou inside the box, who headed his attempt past Baltimore goalkeeper Zach Kane into the top right corner.

Baltimore looked to respond quickly, and they nearly had an equalizer after 21 minutes. Marquez Fernandez delivered a pinpoint throw-in to Pete Caringi, but the resulting header was tipped away by D.C. netminder Cody Niedermeyer. Milo Kapor’s header off of a corner kick moments later sailed high.

Just before the close of the first half, the Bohs had another golden opportunity to even the match, as Geaton Caltabiano threaded a pass through to Mike Gamble inside the 18-yard box. After closing down the angle slightly, Gamble’s drive inched wide of the right post.

Both teams took advantage of the halftime break to shuffle some players around, as the visitors entered two fresh faces into the match, while the hosts sent in five new players.

However, it would be one of the starters for Baltimore who would see most of the offensive opportunities come his way. Pete Caringi, who was the lone scorer in last year’s matchup between these two sides, looked to print his name on the scoresheet throughout the second 45 minutes.

At the 58-minute mark, Caringi put some pace behind a shot from 20 yards out, but directed it straight at substitute keeper Kyle Renfro. Four minutes later, Mamadou Kansaye’s initial chance was blocked, but the rebound fell to Caringi, positioned to the side of the net. Renfro was able to parry the chance away, thwarting Caringi once again.

The visitors nearly had a two-goal cushion with 20 minutes remaining. Kevin Fallet’s attempt from the top of the box hit the left post, with the rebound falling favorably for Dario Redondo. The one-timer from Redondo, however, curled to the right side of the far post.

A red card to Malcolm Harris with 11 minutes to play left the Bohemians with a hill to climb. They struggled to put shots on net; their last clear-cut chance on goal off the foot of Elton Joe resulted in a routine save with just two minutes to go.

Baltimore returns to PDL action on Sunday, as they face the New Jersey LUSO Rangers at 5:00 in Madison, New Jersey.

Bohs draw with Long Island in opener

After a first half in which the visiting Bohemians held much of the momentum, the host Rough Riders responded with a charge of their own, and in the end, nothing could separate the two sides, as they finished in a 2-2 draw Saturday evening at Cy Donnelly Stadium.
It only took three minutes for the visitors to get their first quality chance on net. After two teammates passed over a free kick from 20 yards out, the third man, Geaton Caltabiano, struck his shot well, but missed just wide of the left post. On ten minutes, a corner kick was headed down by Mamadou Kansaye, but his attempt could only be directed across the face of goal.

The Rough Riders had a chance to respond four minutes later, as a free kick from nearly 40 yards away was placed well for Dakota Barnathan, but his header sailed wide right.
The first goal of the contest would come from an unlikely source. A ball sent in by Caltabiano took a deflection off Long Island defender Tom Wharf, would could only watch helplessly as the ball dribbled into the back of his own net, giving Baltimore a 1-0 advantage.

Three minutes after the own goal, Baltimore nearly had a two-goal lead, as Malcolm Harris’ pass was tipped to Pete Caringi, but the second-year Bohs player skied his shot over the crossbar just inside the 18-yard box.

Long Island looked to even things up with two quality opportunities just after the half-hour mark. Stephen Roche’s drive from 15 yards away had to be directed around the post by the Bohemians’ debutante netminder, Andrew Harris. Moments later, a cross from Danny Kramer found Orlando Castaneda deep in Bohemian territory, but his header was flicked to the left side and wide of Harris.

When the teams returned from the halftime interval, some of the intensity started to show through from both sides. Hugh Roberts and Tom Wharf were both cautioned for exchanging some words after a brief scuffle between the two camps.

Ten minutes after the restart, however, the visitors made it 2-0 on what has to be an early “Goal of the Year” contender. Driving into the Long Island half, Malcolm Harris crossed the ball for Caringi, who tapped it off for Julio Arjona. The former Real Maryland man then thumped home a brilliant strike from the edge of the 18, ripping the top-right corner of the net past a stranded Gary Poulin. The goal looked to have sealed the three points on the day, as both the team and the diehard Bohs supporters who made the trek were howling with delight.

Baltimore arguably should have netted two more goals on the wavering Long Island defense. In the 67th minute, Michael Gamble shook off a defender and broke in one-on-one with the goalkeeper Poulin. An outstretched right hand was the only thing keeping the Bohemians from a three-goal advantage. In the 78th, Marquez Fernandez’s bid from 15 yards took a favorable bounce off of a Rough Rider defender before cracking the post.

However, the hosts would not back down in the face of this Baltimore flurry. In the 78th minute, Long Island finally cracked the scoresheet when Orlando Castaneda tucked home a rebound after Stephen Roche’s initial attempt came back off the woodwork.
With one minute remaining in the 90, Dominick Sarle got through the visitors’ backline, turned around in the 18-yard box, and placed a low drive past Andrew Harris to even the score.

Baltimore had one last roll of the dice in the third minute of stoppage time, when Brian Graham’s drive from the left side was blocked away from a sliding Sarle for a corner. Before the Bohs could attempt the set piece, however, the referee called time on the match, leaving both sides to settle for a point a piece in the standings.

The Bohemians (0-0-1) play their first match at Ridley Athletic Complex against the D.C. United Under-23 squad in a friendly on Wednesday at 7:00 pm. Baltimore returns to PDL play on Sunday, May 26th, on the road against the New Jersey LUSO Rangers.

Bohs rack up collegiate honors

ncaa

By Jeff Hemelt

After ending the PDL season in July, a majority of the Baltimore Bohemians players went back to their respective college teams for their fall campaigns.

In all, nine players who featured for the Bohemians in 2012 were named to All-Conference teams, All-Academic teams, or earned other awards at their respective institutions.
UMBC boasted four Bohemians who earned accolades from the America East Conference (AEC). Pete Caringi was the most decorated player, capturing three awards. Caringi was selected to the AEC First Team, and was also named “Striker of the Year.” In addition, the fans voted the Perry Hall native as “Player of the Year.” Caringi netted two goals in 12 games with the Bohemians during their inaugural season.

Two other Retrievers were named to the AEC Second Team. Defender Oumar Ballo and goalkeeper Phil Saunders rounded out the trifecta of All-Conference selections. Ballo played in 14 games with the Bohemians, while Saunders posted a 2-4-3 record, 30 saves, and a 1.29 goals against average with Baltimore in 2012.

Dave Vaeth was named to the AEC All-Academic Team; currently, the junior midfielder holds a 3.44 GPA while working towards a degree in mechanical engineering. Vaeth made 13 appearances with the Bohemians.

Moving northwest from the UMBC campus in Catonsville, we come across Stevenson University’s junior midfielder, Chris Panian. Panian notched a team-leading eight goals and two assists with the Mustangs, earning him First Team honors in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC), as well as a spot on the All-Commonwealth Conference squad. Panian was a late addition to the Bohs’ squad in 2012, playing in only two games. He made the most of his time in the PDL, though, scoring a goal against the New Jersey Rangers on July 1st.

Staying in the MAC, we find Mike Kovach, who plays for Messiah College in Pennsylvania. Kovach scored seven goals for the Falcons during the regular season, en route to a 17-0-1 record. Kovach was named to the All-Commonwealth Conference team, and made the Second Team for the entire Middle Atlantic Conference. Mike made three appearances in the PDL last season.

Down in College Park, London Woodberry scored two goals for the Terps in regular season play, as Maryland rolled to a 2012 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) title. The senior defender was honored with a spot in the All-ACC Second Team. Another late addition to the Bohemians roster, Woodberry made four appearances for the club in 2012.
Going further south to Virginia, we hit George Mason University, where Hugh Roberts stars for the Patriots. The junior scored once and started all 18 games in the regular season, earning a place on the All-Colonial Athletic Association Third Team. With the Bohemians, Roberts recorded one assist in 14 games.

To wrap up the list of stellar Bohemians, we travel to St. Louis and Washington University. Junior forward Jeremy Kirkwood tied for the team lead in points with 11, despite playing in only eight games during the 2012 campaign. He scored four goals and added three assists for the Bears, making the All-University Athletic Association First Team. Kirkwood made two appearances for the Bohs last season.

The Baltimore Bohemians concluded their 2012 PDL campaign on Sunday night, as they defeated the Long Island Rough Riders, 2-1, at Cedar Lane Park.

Long Island had the first quality chance of the match 11 minutes in, as Keith Detelj received a throw deep in the Bohemians half, but his sharp-angled attempt could only find the side netting.

Baltimore responded five minutes later with a chance of their own, but Brian Graham’s low drive from 15 yards was held easily by Rough Riders netminder Alex Naples. One minute later, Kingsley Onwuka tried to squeeze in a tight angle shot from three yards away, but Naples forced a corner with a sweeping leg save.

Back at the opposite end of the pitch, the Rough Riders created two more glorious opportunities at net. In the 21st minute, Tim Parker snuck in past the Bohemians defense, and forced Phil Saunders into a save from 12 yards out. Two minutes later, Stephan Barea’s half volley off of a corner kick had to be tipped away by Saunders.

The hosts finally pulled ahead in the 24th minute, as Joe Meyer’s initial shot was kicked away by Naples, but the rebound fell right to Brian Graham, who neatly put the ball into the back of the net for Baltimore’s first goal of the night.

Baltimore nearly doubled their advantage after the half hour mark, but neither Mamadou Kansaye nor Elton Joe could convert their attempts, as the former missed wide from 20 yards out, while the latter saw his angled shot from ten yards held well by Naples.

The Bohemians created another quality attack five minutes after the restart. Kyle McCord crossed to Pete Caringi, whose half volley sliced across the face of goal. Long Island countered in the 54th minute, but Tim Parker’s drive from 20 yards forced Phil Saunders to make another tip save.

Just past the halfway mark of the second half, Baltimore netted its second goal of the night, and it came from an unlikely goal scorer. Brian Graham swooped in a long cross to the right side for Elton Joe. Joe appeared to make another cross towards the far post, but the ball instead found its way over the outstretched arms of Naples, and hit the far corner of the net to give the Bohemians a 2-0 advantage.

Long Island earned a consolation goal in the 78th minute, as Keith Detelj looped in a ball towards the Baltimore net. Mamadou Kansaye attempted to clear the ball off the line, but it just had enough momentum to give the Rough Riders a lifeline back into the game.

The Baltimore defensive line held strong through the final ten minutes, and the hosts nearly salted the game away with seconds remaining in regulation, but Kingsley Onwuka’s high arching shot missed to the right of the open net.

Baltimore finished their first PDL season with an overall record of 5-7-4, good for 6th place in the Mid-Atlantic Division. Their five home wins tied for second best in the division, alongside Reading United and Jersey Express (both had 5-1-2 home records).

Bohs draw with Brooklyn

In their penultimate match of the 2012 PDL season, the Baltimore Bohemians faced the Brooklyn Knights on a cloudy Saturday evening at Cedar Lane Park.

The hosts suffered a cruel blow just five minutes into the contest, as Dave Vaeth had to leave the match after he was sent to the turf on a hard foul.

Despite the setback, Baltimore struck first on the quarter hour, as Elton Joe swooped in a cross to Pete Caringi, who curled in a wonderful strike from 20 yards out, hitting the top corner past Knights netminder Ed Shore.

Brooklyn responded with a fair bit of possession in the Bohemians’ end, and forced the hosts to turn over the ball multiple times. A misplayed header by G.R. Cannon in the 21st minute allowed Rafael Abreu a free crack at goal, but his shot from ten yards away missed wide right. Minutes later, another defensive miscue was pounced on by Kyle Schlesinger, but his tight angle shot was deflected away for a corner.

Just before the half hour mark, the Knights cashed in on yet another Baltimore defensive lapse. A mistimed header ended up bouncing towards the open net, where Dwayne Reid thumped the ball home from a yard out to even the contest at 1-1.

It wouldn’t be long before the hosts jumped back into the lead. In the 38th minute, some frantic action in the box caused chaos, but Kingsley Onwuka ultimately found himself with the ball from close range, and he slotted home a shot into the roof of the net to give Baltimore a 2-1 advantage.

The battle for possession swung back and forth throughout the early stages of the second half, as both teams had chances at the net. Brooklyn had two consecutive corner kicks ten minutes after the restart, but none of their attempts at goal found their way past Jordan Tatum.

Midway through the second half, Baltimore had two quality opportunities to net their third goal of the match. In the 66th minute, a Hugh Roberts chip from an acute angle was held well by Shore. Moments later, the Brooklyn goalkeeper spilled a Chris Somerville shot from just inside the box, but luckily for Shore, he deflected the ball just enough to send it inches wide of the right post.

Tempers flared with just less than 20 minutes to go, as both teams got into a bit of a scuffle in the Brooklyn defensive half. Chris Somerville was sent off for pushing a Brooklyn player, while G.R. Cannon and Rafael Abreu each received yellow cards for their actions.

In the 81st minute, the Bohemians were agonizingly close to putting the game’s result beyond doubt, as Hugh Roberts made some terrific moves, slicing through the Brooklyn defense, but his shot from ten yards away was safely held by Shore.

With two minutes of regulation time remaining, Brooklyn found their equalizer. It was a heartbreaker for the Bohemians, as a looping pass into the box failed to be cleared, and the ball was knocked into the net off of a Baltimore player.

In the fifth minute of stoppage time, Brooklyn nearly capped off a miraculous comeback, but Jordan Tatum pulled off the save of the game, diving to his right to tip away a 20-yard blast from Tom Adair moments before the final whistle blew.

Baltimore (4-7-4) closes out their season on Sunday, as they face the Long Island Rough Riders at 5:30.

Bohs fall to Bermuda

The Bohemians’ 800-mile trek to the island of Bermuda ended in disappointment Sunday afternoon, as the host Hogges defeated Baltimore, 2-1, at BAA Field.

Bermuda struck first in the 21st minute. A penalty was awarded to the hosts after Hugh Roberts brought down Lashun Dill in the box. Antwan Russell stepped up and converted the kick past Jordan Tatum for a 1-0 advantage.

Just before the stroke of halftime, Baltimore leveled the score, as Kingsley Onwuka headed home past Hogges’ netminder Troy Hall off of a corner kick.

The Bohemians nearly took the lead just after halftime, as Jereme Raley chipped the ball over Hall towards the gaping net. Unfortunately, the chip struck the crossbar and bounced back into play.

With just under 20 minutes to play, Bermuda found the game-winner, as Wayne Bean converted a header past Phil Saunders, who had replaced Tatum at halftime. A good cross from Damico Coddington was picked out well by the midfielder, who easily directed the ball home from a few yards away.

Baltimore (4-7-3) returns to Cedar Lane Park on Saturday for their next-to-last match of the season, as they host the Brooklyn Knights at 7:00. The first 100 fans over the age of 18 will receive a free can of Old Bay seasoning at the gate.
